ชุมชนแห่งการเรียนรู้ทางวิชาชีพ คือกลุ่ม ครู นักการศึกษา ผู้บริหารโรงเรียน และผู้มีส่วนได้ส่วนเสีย ที่มาพบปะกันอย่างสม่ำเสมอ เพื่อแลกเปลี่ยนเรียนรู้เรื่องความชำนาญและประสบการณ์ในการจัดการเรียนการสอน และการทำงานร่วมกันเป็นทีมเพื่อพัฒนาผลสัมฤทธิ์ของนักเรียนและเทคนิคการสอน ชุมชนแห่งการเรียนรู้ทางวิชาชีพจึงเป็น “เครื่องมือ” ที่ทำให้เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงจากการสอนอย่างโดดเดี่ยวสู่การทำงานเป็นทีม โดยมุ่งไปที่ผลการเรียนรู้ที่คาดหวัง ชุมชนแห่งการเรียนรู้ทางวิชาชีพไม่ใช่กิจกรรมที่เกิดขึ้นเพียงชั่วครั้งชั่วคราวสำหรับจุดประสงค์ทั่วๆไปแต่เป็นกระบวนการที่เกิดขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่องเพื่อพัฒนาสมรรถนะของสมาชิกในกลุ่มและประสิทธิภาพการเรียนรู้ของนักเรียน กิจกรรมนี้จะเกิดอย่างขี้นซ้ำๆจนกระทั่งกลายเป็นวัฒนธรรมของโรงเรียนที่ยั่งยืนในที่สุด

A professional learning community (PLC) is a group of educators ranging from teachers, school boards, educationists to stake holders that meets regularly—every other week or every month, shares their expertise along with their experiences and works collaboratively to improve learning achievement of students and their instructional techniques. In other words it is a “tool” that makes the shift from teaching in isolation to operating as a collaborative team, focusing on students’ learning expectations. PLC is not a short-term activity that happens for a common purpose but it is a continuous improvement in staff performance as well as student learning. The team cycle will be repeated until they become deeply embedded in the sustainable school’s culture.
